Obituary of Eugene Roberts

Eugene Roberts, 91, of Chapel Hill passed away on July 6, 2022 at the Hospice House in Pittsboro, North Carolina following an extended illness.  He was preceded in death by his parents, William Arler and Eva Roberts; his son, Thomas Eugene Roberts; his grandsons, Andrew Martin Hartwell and Thomas Eugene Roberts, Jr.; and six brothers.

Mr. Roberts was born on October 1^st, 1930 in Johnston County, NC.  He was enlisted in the United States Army from 1950-1952.  After leaving the Army, he then served in the National Guard from 1952-1956.  He subsequently obtained his Electrical Contractor’s License and was employed as an independent electrician, as well as a building inspector for the Orange County Planning Department.  Mr. Roberts also served as an Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy from 1965-1966 under former Sheriff Buck Knight.

Mr. Roberts is survived by his devoted wife of 72 years, Peggy Jo Brockwell Roberts; his daughter, Susan Roberts Herring (Dean); his son, Barry Roberts (Robin Tilley); grandchildren, Tammy Roberts Upchurch (mom, Cheryl Roberts), Tyler Comar (Marissa), Christopher Hartwell, Elizabeth Hartwell, Jason Hartwell, McKenzie Roberts, and Lonnie Roberts; and three great-grandsons, Thomas Upchurch, Jesse Comar, and Silas Comar.

The family will receive visitors at Light House Baptist Church, 12063 US Hwy 15-501 N, Chapel Hill at 1 p.m. on July 11, 2022, with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m.   A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at Westwood Cemetery following the church service.  Visitors and family friends are invited to visit the home after all services are concluded.
