HILLSBOROUGH - Wesley Edward Smith, 70, of Hillsborough, NC passed on September 12, 2012 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born to Oliver Sylvester Smith and Halcyon Reynolds Smith in Skowhegan, Maine. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1961-1964. In 1994, he retired as a master ironworker from Connecticut's Local 15, with which he proudly built many bridges, buildings, and other large structures throughout New England. After moving to North Carolina, he joined the Ironworkers' Local 843, from which he retired in 2008.
Wes lived life to the fullest, canoeing down the Connecticut River, walking the Appalachian Trail, RVing cross country, building several homes for his family, and raising pigs and chickens. He loved NASCAR and raced his own vehicle in New England in the 1970s. He always loved to give hugs and kisses to family and friends, even to new acquaintances.
Wes is survived by his wife Ann Marie Vosburg and her son, Logan; his first wife, Beatrice Caminati Smith, and their children and grandchildren: daughter Dawn Smith-Sherwood, her husband Kenneth Sherwood, and their daughters Clara and Cecilia of Indiana, PA; son Wesley Benjamin Evansmith and his wife Jennifer and their son Finnegan of Shrewsbury, MA.
Wes was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 25 years, Mary Ann Contino Steele Smith. He is also survived by his loving stepsons: Ron Steele and his wife Laurie of Peterboro, NH; Joseph Steele and his wife Jeri of East Lyme, CT; and Steven Steele and his wife Lori of East Lyme, CT as well as many loving step-grandchildren and great step-grandchildren.
Wes is also survived by his brothers: David Smith of Maine, Richard Smith of California, Everett Stevens of Florida, William Stevens of Maine, and Clifton Stevens of Maine.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Walker's Funeral Home in Hillsborough, NC.
