Obituary of Jean Harrison Gregory

Jean Harrison Gregory died on April 11th, 2022, just 6 days before her 99th birthday at Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill, NC. Miss Gregory was the daughter of Arthur Wynns Gregory and Ruth Shaw Gregory. Along with her parents, she is predeceased by a brother, Henry Shaw Gregory and two sisters, Ruth Gregory Proctor and Elizabeth Gregory Preston. Her sister, Jessie Gregory Lutz and two brothers, Arthur Wynns Gregory and Frederick Harrison Gregory, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, survive her.
Miss Gregory was born in Halifax, North Carolina on April 17, 1923. She was the oldest of 7 children. She graduated from University of North Carolina, Greensboro (Women’s College) in 1945. She had a long career as a Physical Therapist and resided most of her adult life in western NC. She lived in Asheville and Columbus, North Carolina for many years where she enjoyed tending a beautiful flower garden and a landscape that featured rhododendron, azaleas, holly, and dogwood.
Miss Gregory enjoyed Christmas with her extended family in Charlotte, NC and Thanksgiving in Havre de Grace, Maryland, and summer family reunions in Fontana, NC. She enjoyed nature walks in the NC Mountains. She traveled extensively around the world with friends and her sister, Jessie and Jessie’s husband, Ray Lutz.
For the past several years, Jean resided at Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill. She enjoyed the company of her sister, Jessie and many friends. She really loved the Carol Woods Retirement community and all the opportunities that were offered to the residents. She attended the symphony in Chapel Hill until she was confined to the facility. Even then, she took advantage of all the cultural and social events offered on the campus. Miss Gregory’s family would like to thank all of the caring staff at Carol Woods. They took very good care of her for many years.
Miss Gregory’s memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on April 23rd, 2022. The funeral will take place at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Halifax and the burial will follow at the Saint Mark’s Cemetery in Halifax. Her nephew, Greg Proctor, will officiate.
