Don passed from this life Sunday evening, April 10, 2022. He was born May 20, 1935, in Fremont, Virginia as the youngest of 12 Tickle children.
Don had a distinguished and highly decorated 27 year career in the US Marine Corp. He bravely served in the Vietnam War and received high honors for combat in both Korea and Vietnam. He ended his career in counterintelligence.
His medals and commendations include:
Purple Heart for service in the Vietnam War
Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal
Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal
Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal
Combat Action Commemorative Medal
Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation
Navy and Marine Corp Presidential Unit Citation
Don is preceded in death by his wife, Carol Ann, and son Michael Tickle.
Don is survived by two sons, Rusty Tickle and Stephen Tickle; two daughters, Tina Tickle Hocutt (husband Mark Hocutt) and Sheri Taylor; Eleven grandchildren, Kimberly Tickle, Mikael Moore, Dustin Moore, Tyler Hocutt, Hallee Hocutt, Brianna Wiener, Nicole Walker, Kyleigh Vestal, Carter Vestal, Ayden Taylor; and six great grandchildren, Kaiden Boyd, Nora Wiener, Ivy Wiener, Samuel Wiener, Wynter Moore and Ronin Moore.
A private graveside service will be held at 1pm Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Markham Memorial Gardens in Chapel Hill.
