Dennis and I came to the UNC Art Department in the same year —- 1968, when I was hired as Assistant Slide Curator, but, because the painting studios were elsewhere on campus rather than in the Ackland building, I didn’t get acquainted with him until we all moved into the new Hanes Art Center in 1980, by which time I had moved up to become Slide Curator.
From then until I retired in 2000, Dennis came often to the slide room , and often stopped by the office to chat — usually about art. We discovered that we shared the same birthday —- January 31 –– we were fellow Aquarians, so we had similar sensibilities. Even though I hadn’t seen him in years, it saddens me to realize he’s gone.
But I do have something wonderful by which to remember him. In 1994, my husband, David Beaudin, and I bought two of Dennis’ dynamic, expressionistic figure paintings on paper. David framed them himself and to they still have pride of place in our den, hanging as a pair over the sofa. We look at them with pleasure every day.
To Maudy, Daphne and Conrad, I offer my deepest sympathies for the loss of your kind friend and father.

My Condolences to the family and friends of Dennis Zaborowski. I was happy to finally meet Dennis in the spring of 2017. We had been having long conversations on the phone about family genealogy for several years. I flew down from Ohio and his cousin Elaine came up from NM and we met in Chapel Hill to do some family history on the “Zaborowski Family” all together. I am a second cousin to his children. It was a packed 3 days. We went through his photographs, told stories of events, and shared photos by thumb drives. Dennis is not much for technology but we were able to get a lot done in a short time. I was pleased to meet his son, Conrad while I was down there and seen some of Dennis’ art work and the Chapel Hill area and college. I will miss my long conversations with him on the phone. He holds a special spot in my heart with the artist flare...I have a beautiful water color painting he did for his aunt (my grandmother) early in his career hanging in the living room and think of him often. Now Dennis will be able to do his paintings in the big beautiful sky! God Bless and RIP Dennis, I will miss you-funny delightful man and an awesome artist."

Sincere condolences to Daphne,Conrad, & the entire family.
Growing up with Dennis, we regularly shared adventures through Elementary School (Sts Peter & Paul), High School (St Stanislaus), Boy Scouts (troop 220) —but we most fondly remembered our times at around 6 years of age as the neighborhood “cowboys” as we regularly solved problems and had daily adventures on our ranches (East 97 St “western ranges”). We always appreciate the lifelong friendship, his bing in our wedding party 54 years ago,and many wonderful memories.

Hello Bob - Dennis was my art mentor, and after he retired from UNC Art Department, he painted some in my studio. One of the paintings he did there depicts exactly what you describe! There are two boys, one chasing the other, with toy guns in the Polish neighborhood of Cleveland. I would like to get this painting or at least an image of it to you. Laura Cole
