Nancy Lloyd Pendergraft Campbell

September 22, 1937 – February 8, 2022

On February 8th, Nancy Campbell passed away peacefully after several months of declining health. Nancy worked at the University of North Carolina’s Faculty Club for thirty years. She was a former member of the Jaycees in Chapel Hill, an active member of the Golden Generations reunion committee, and the Chapel Hill High School Ladies Lunch group. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother for Pack 845 for several years.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years, Jim Campbell, and her two brothers, Harry and Bill Pendergraft. She is survived by her three sons, Mike Campbell of Chapel Hill, Jeffrey Lee Campbell (Patty Murray) of New York City, and Will Campbell (Nora) of Matthews, NC; her grandchildren Jared, Madeleine Campbell Smith, and Ben; and great-grandchildren Colton and Delilah.

Nancy’s hobbies included cooking, baking, gardening, birdwatching, and watching classic movies. She was known to all as a loving mother, devoted wife, cherished friend, and terrific cook. Over the years, the Campbell house became a magnet for friendly get-togethers of all types—especially their annual Christmas night musical gatherings, featuring some of the area’s most talented performers. Nancy’s hospitality and welcoming spirit left a lasting impression on all who met her. She harbored a not-so-secret platonic crush on television personality/food writer Anthony Bordain, who’s globetrotting escapades appealed to Nancy’s sense of adventure. This “crush” was the subject of much good-natured ribbing among family and friends. A little-known fact is that Nancy was also skilled at communicating with owls, mimicking their tree-top hoots in her backyard garden—further evidence of her deep connection to nature.

The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses at Peak Resources Alamance and Authoracare Hospice. A special thanks to Cindy Porterfield for her love and personal care of Nancy in her last few months.

A private service to celebrate Nancy's life will be held at a later date due to the pandemic. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to: Durham Rescue Mission. 919-688-9641 ext. 5024
