I worked with Fred for years in the kitchen at Slug’s. He was so smart, introspective and a spatial thinker. Many things that I was too immature to be or even recognize that I was lacking even though we were very close in age. With his downplayed personality and subtle humor and without him even trying, he made me long to attain these attributes and I strove to do so with at least some success. I never thought to thank him for his incidental teachings. I certainly wish that I would have. I am confident he will be sorely missed by all that he came in contact.

Fred was a wonderful, caring person. Fred was always there to help whenever anyone needed a helping hand, and he was always there to have a nice conversation. There were many times Fred would help me solve a problem or go the extra mile to make sure I was able to resolve any issue that may have come up. Fred will be greatly missed and he will not be forgotten.

Fred was one of the most friendly, capable and helpful person I have ever met. Problems were solved fast and before you knew it. If Fred was taking care of a problem it got done fast and it got done well. Service with a smile and a friendly chat. Fred will be missed and remembered.

I was close friends with Fred back in the early 1990s. We became friends for a short time again later, around 2010 or so. Fred was a very unusually special person, and we had a soul-type connection. He was incredibly sensitive to other people and deeply creative. We shared many letters and stories and special times together. He was love-centered, truly.

I met Fred in 2018 when I went to work in facilities at UNC. Fred would put work requests in and would always do what he could to help . He was on campus all through the covid lock down . He seemed like he was happy to be there . God bless this kind hearted man and his family . I’ll miss you Fred .

Fred was super knowledgeable about many things. He was willing to accommodate any task and you could tell he did it because he cared. He never asked/expected a thank you -- it was just the kind of man he was. I only knew him for two years but it was clear he loved his job and serving people through it. We'll miss you Fred.

Fred - We will all miss you SO much. We will miss your generous spirit, your can-do work-ethic and your readiness to tackle any challenge. There were many times when I emailed you a request and you showed up at my office door less than 5 minutes later with a quiet smile and a willingness to help - a true treasure. You were an amazing repository of key Departmental knowledge - including where the conduits were behind walls and under floors - that you used to help all of us. You were willing to help with any challenge no matter how unusual - you once helped us to move a harpsichord over to the Stone Center for a chemistry event. Thank you for sharing your expertise in woodworking - I think of you every time one of your tips or tricks saves the day. We knew the department would survive the pandemic because Fred was there holding down (and sometimes repairing or rebuilding) the fort. You were extraordinarily deserving of your Extra Mile award. Our hearts go out to your family in this time of loss.

Fred was a wonderful colleague, always ready to help and effective at doing so. As with others, I would often wind up chatting with Fred for a bit after attending to whatever issue was resolved in the lab. He will be deeply missed.

I will miss Fred. I met Fred two years ago when I just arrived on campus. Every day it seemed I found myself in need of help with setting up this or that in my lab, and Fred was the single most helpful and reliable person when it came to doing that. In this way, he will always be a part of my lab.

I knew Fred through his work in the chemistry department. Fred got things done, didn't forget the details, and yet still had time to chat with you about whatever was going on. And, he had the best 'can-do' attitude. I think just last year he won the Extra Mile award, and at the time I thought there's no one who deserves this more. The chemistry department lost a great person. Fred, you will be missed!

Caring, considerate, selfless, thoughtful, and always kind are a few words to describe Fred. Regardless of his long "to do" list, if something was needed, he would make every effort to assist in any way.
Fred was such a good sport! One year, when asked, he joined our walking team in order to have the maximum number of participants. Shuffling from building to building taking care of tasks, he racked up lots of steps for our group!
When I returned to work this week, walking across the Venable Murray parking lot, I thought, "This place, is just not going to be the same without Fred Young." Not too many can follow in his footsteps.

I started at UNC in 2019, so haven't known Fred for very long. But I knew him to be quiet, contemplative, considerate, and kind, always willing to do things large and small to help everyone working and learning around him. I wish we'd had more time to work together. My condolences to his family.

I went to school with Fred from 7th through 12th grade and I also worked with Fred in the Chemistry Department for many, many years. He and I were in band together, both playing the clarinet, all through school. We went on numerous band trips together and we both were CHHS Marching Tigers. Fred was always a great musician and smart in school. I remember him being involved in the school yearbooks. He was always one that knew everyone but never liked to be in the spotlight. I got to know Fred better once we were working together in Chemistry. He always had a smile and an awesome story to share. He was always there for his Chemistry family, just so dedicated. Years ago, when I went through a hard time in my life, Fred was there for me. He was a good friend to me during a period when I especially needed it. For that, I will never forget. I'm so saddened by his passing. The world has lost such a sweet, caring soul. Rest in peace, my friend.

I spoke with Fred each morning at the loading dock as I came into the building to go to my office - Fred willingly shared his life experiences as well as thoughts on daily departmental events. I will miss our conversations and his thoughtful gestures. One such was that Fred volunteered to water my plants on a weekly basis when the Pandemic struck and we were not allowed on campus. He managed to keep my plants alive for a whole year. Fred was always there when I needed him. Rest in peace dear friend.

Fred was a kind, gentle soul. I will always remember him for his various depths of knowledge about any and everything that we talked about. He had some great stories of trips to other countries and experiences that he had in life. He was one of the hardest workers that I've ever known. He poured his heart and soul into his life and work and it showed consistently. He will be missed tremendously. May he rest in peace.
