I did my PhD in India and I wanted to pursue my career in science. In 2015, I wrote to Dr. Wilson that I need a letter of support for a grant application. I remember that he was on vacation at that time.
Amidst, his busy schedule, he made sure that I get the letter of support from him. It was an amazing gesture from a great scientist and I will always remember that. I remember telling my colleagues about his kindness.
I was fond of his work but more than that I was so fond of his helpful nature and kindness.
I offer my condolences to the family.
Kind Regards,
Vandana

We extend our deepest condolences to the family. We have known Sam for many years. He was a superb scientist, and moreover, a man of great integrity and honesty. We admired Sam, not only for his science, but also for his personal qualities.
He was very generous with his advice and support, and he left an indelible impact on our lives. We were blessed by his friendship and support and will remember him with love. We will miss you, Sam.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you Dorothea, Kathy, Joe, and the surviving spouses and family after just hearing of your loss of Sam. For those friends of Sam in the science arena who are unaware, I am from another part of Sam’s life far aside from the scientific world. A big stress reliever for Sam away from his detailed and very concentrated lab work was in the distance running world. I was Sam’s running partner for about 11 years during his time at the NIH in Bethesda. What most of Sam’s friends didn’t know about him was that after a long intense day in the lab, Sam would go home and unwind by running an aggressive 12 miles per day seven days a week training regime down the C&O Canal toe path. Yes, 84 miles a week sounds like a lot, but that was not enough and Sam would increase that up to 100 miles a week starting eight weeks prior to a big Marathon. Sam was a force to be reckoned with in the senior division of the distance running world having competed in several Boston Marathons as well as many other big national Marathons and shorter distance races. I miss those great running years with you Sam and you will be greatly missed by all of us.

Sam was a long-time friend and collaborator in our studies on base excision repair in chromatin. He was a giant to all of us in the DNA repair field and leaves a legacy of true commitment to his students, postdocs, colleagues and friends. His passing leaves a gaping hole - indeed, he was a ‘scientist’s scientist’ as he personified the meaning of humility and grace, while having a superior intellect and dedication to precision. Sam will truly be missed by us all.

Sam was one of the finest scientists I have the honor to have known. He was honest, honorable, and dedicated. We shared a lab bench for two years at the Harvard Medical School and he believed in me when I failed to believe in myself. He was always willing to help, had a probing mind and phenomenal insights. It is hard to imagine that he is no longer with us. While we haven't seen or communicated for many years I always knew that I could reach out to him whenever I needed to. I shall miss you, Sam.

What can one say about a good man? By knowing you, Sam, I can answer that question. He is kind and thoughtful, with a great sense of humor. His loyalty and sense of duty are matched by his extraordinary intellect and love of family. Sam, you were not only a gifted researcher, you were a good friend. Your colleagues at NIEHS will miss you greatly. We were fortunate to know a good man.
In deepest sympathy,
Robin Arnette

It is very sad to think that there is no more such talented scientist and exceptional person. I had a very happy occasion to meet Sam during tRNA workshop in Poland in 1991. Then he invited me to visit his Lab in Galveston. It was very hard time for Russian science because of the whole situation in our country. Sam gave me a great opportunity to work with him in Galveston and then in North Carolina. It was extremely helpful for extending work of my home laboratory. Sam did a lot for gaining knowledge of base excision repair and his lovely DNA polymerase beta. Sam lived for science. I remember when in Galveston he came to the Lab early in the morning and Dorothea brought him breakfast to work. I can’t trust until now that he left us. My deep condolences to Dorothea and to all members of Sam's family, and to his group. He will be always in memory of colleagues and friends.

It is very sad to think that Sam passed away. He was a”giant” not only for his science but also for his humanity. Sam taught us all that science is sharing, collaboration. His uniqueness was a boundless support to those who he knew had fewer opportunities but a genuine interest in science. He helped without expecting a return. His gentle soul will forever remain in our hearts

I didn’t know Sam extremely well, but the limited interactions I had with him left an impression on me even to this day. It is apparent that he treats others with the utmost respect and doesn’t hesitate to speak words of kindness and appreciation. He is someone who listened to and valued what others had to say; he was a great human being, and he will be missed greatly at NIEHS. If I’m not mistaken, I think that every trainee that wrote a K99/R00 grant with Sam was funded, meaning his mentees had a 100% success rate. This speaks volumes about what a great mentor he was, which was recognized with mentoring awards from NIEHS and NIH as a whole, which are written about in several places: https://www.niehs.nih.gov/careers/research/fellows/involvement/awards/mentor/index.cfm & https://factor.niehs.nih.gov/2015/8/spotlight-wilson/index.htm & https://factor.niehs.nih.gov/2014/12/spotlight-mentor/index.htm

I'd like to speak for the family and thank everyone that has left comments or reached out through other means. We love to hear about how he inspired and supported so many people.
While we always knew he was a scientist, Allie, James and myself knew him only as Grandaddy. He was our role model, coach, teacher, and friend. He supported and spoiled us every opportunity he could get. He was always there for us be it graduations, or phone calls for help with homework and our various injuries. He took us on great trips to New York, beaches, football games, and theme parks (he loved roller coasters). Each trip was spent with him trying to teach or entertain us. Every Christmas he was Santa. Each year he tried to find bigger and fatter trees to impress us with and stayed up late to assemble our gifts for the morning. He ruined our palates with the wine he hunted down through dedicated research. He was always a source of humor and wisdom and is the center of culture and tradition in our family. He will be sorely missed.

A beautiful tribute Brendan. You all were spoiled in his love and you share that love every day. Continue living in his image. Your Granddad always made us feel like family. He will be dearly missed. Meet you at Cedar Point? Let's ride a roller coaster in his honor!

Sam was a true giant in the DNA repair field who profoundly influenced students, professors and researchers all over the world. I knew Sam for over 20 years and not only admired his amazing scientific abilities but also his wonderful humanity and selfless consideration for all. Although the world is diminished by his passing and I will miss him greatly, we can all be inspired by this truly wonderful friend and colleague who gave so much to so many.

It was truly a pleasure to know and work with Sam. He will be greatly missed.
