Betty Lucille Tapp Carter, 97, recently residing at Mebane Ridge Assisted Living in Mebane and formerly of Elk Drive in Burlington passed at Liberty Commons on Tuesday March 16, 2021 where she was recovering from surgery to repair a broken leg.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Harold “Bill” Carter, and son William Keith Carter. She was the fifth of eight children of Tullie Richard and Annie Smith Tapp of Efland. After many years working at Western Electric in Burlington, then at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, she embarked on a second career as a nurse and retired from Alamance County Hospital in Burlington. Lucille was a member of Andrews Memorial Baptist Church in Graham.
Lucille is survived by her brother Lindsay Tapp of Efland, his spouse Evelyn and numerous nieces and nephews, to whom she was affectionately often just “Aunt Lukey.” She was an active member of her church, her community, and her family. She balanced career, service and family with a cheerfulness and care for others that demonstrated her strength of character and her faith.
Services will be held on Thursday March 18, 2021 at 2:00 PM at the Walkers Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane and will be led by Pastor Brandon Rouse of Andrews Memorial. Interment follows at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery where she will be laid to rest alongside Bill and Keith in the countryside just moments from her childhood home.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm before the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial gift to the Chestnut Ridge Memorial Association (c/o Jason Elmore, Treasurer, 1015 Buckhorn Road, Mebane, NC 27302).
