Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James (Jim) Campbell passed away on Thanksgiving Day after a brief illness. Jim was born on September 30, 1936, in Durham, NC, and was raised in Carrboro, NC. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Nancy Campbell; their three sons, Mike Campbell (Carol) of Chapel Hill, Jeffrey Lee Campbell (Patty Murray) of New York City, and Will Campbell (Nora) of Matthews, NC; his grandchildren Jared, Madeleine Campbell Smith, and Ben; and great-grandchildren Colton and Delilah.

Jim grew up in the small community of Carrboro before meeting the love of his life, Nancy, while a pre-teen-ager. They married when Jim was 19, while he was in the US Navy in 1956. After 2 years in the US Navy, stationed in Norfolk, VA, Jim returned to North Carolina to work in the printing business for Colonial Press until 1969 when he took a job with West TV in Burlington, NC. Shortly thereafter, he was asked to manage West TV’s new store in Chapel Hill, which he did for a few years before starting his own business in Carrboro—Tar Heel TV in 1976. He later worked with Fitch Lumber Company for a few years before retiring at age 62. Jim was known for his healthy sense of humor, his story-telling ability, his love of family, and his devotion to the UNC Tarheels. He was a member of the Jaycees and later the Roosters Club. In his spare time, Jim was an avid golfer and enjoyed woodworking projects. A private service to celebrate Jim's life will be held at a later date due to the pandemic. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to: Durham Rescue Mission. 919-688-9641 ext. 5024
