Obituary of Frank Joseph Gomba

   Frank J. Gomba quietly departed this life at his residence in Hillsborough NC on 7/11/20.

   Frank was born on December 19, 1930 in Perth Amboy NJ. He graduated from Montclair State Teachers College with a BS in Biology in 1952 and a Master’s Degree in Chemistry in 1954. He married Vivian Thompson, his college sweetheart, a teacher and media specialist, in 1955.  In 1957, he joined the faculty of the United States Naval Academy, where “he became legendary over a 43-year career as a teacher and mentor”.  Even after his retirement at age 70, he continued giving extra instruction to the Midshipman and the title of Professor Emeritus was conferred upon him in 2000 by the USNA.

   Frank and Vivian had 3 children Elizabeth, Katie, and Chris. His children remember him as a kind father who encouraged, supported, and was very proud of them.

   Frank loved family, Navy sports, stamp collecting, his dogs, Hess trucks, and travel. He loved corresponding with friends. He was passionate about teaching. He served as the Varsity basketball rep for 10 years and continued to cheer for Navy as an avid fan his entire life.   He was an active and dedicated member of the St John’s the Evangelist church in Severna Park, Md and had a beautiful tenor voice that he lent many years to their choir

   Frank is survived by his children and grandchildren. Dr Elizabeth G. Motyka (daughter Jolan) of Chapel Hill, NC, Mary Katherine Fields (children Will and Zoe) of Hastings on Hudson, NY, and Christopher F. Gomba of Severna Park, MD.  He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vivian T Gomba lately of Hillsborough NC and his parents Frank and Anna Kapencu Gomba and sisters Isabelle and Ann of Perth Amboy NJ.
