Barbara and I became best friends for life when we were 5 and learned we also were cousins. Although the miles and years separated us, we always picked up as though we had been together the day before. I wish I had gone to the lake when she asked last year. I will love her forever. She was so special in High School. Her senior superlative was Most Likely to Succeed, and she certainly did! I had the pleasure of working tirelessly with her on our High School newspaper. We also spend time together in the Adirondack Mountains of New York with summer jobs fairly close by. RIP BBM

Dr. Moran was an incredible teacher and mentor. She has had such a strong impact on so many. When I broke my ankle (badly) during my final semester, she recorded her lectures for me every week and kept me on pace to finish. I will never forget her kindness to me, or just how much fun she was to be around.

Twenty-one years ago when I interviewed for an assistant professor position at SILS, Barbara Moran was Dean of the School. When I interviewed with her, I found her ideals and values exciting, her approach to leadership thoughtful, and her expectations of excellence invigorating. I thought, "I would love to work for this woman!" And I did! I was still working on my dissertation on the day the official offer letter arrived, saying I had six months to complete my thesis, or else....but it was a carrot, not a stick. Barbara pulled us forward, rather than pushing us. She helped us become better! She helped us become stronger! She helped us become kinder!
She was, and will always be, a mentor for me. I count myself successful the more I am like her. Barbara, we will keep your beacon alight at SILS!

My entire family knew and loved Barbara. Our friendship began in Buffalo, NY in the mid-1970’s. My wife and Barbara became close friends while working together at the Park School, and by happenstance Joe and I taught together Buffalo State, and we too became close friends. The four of us remained close friends, across both time and miles. I will remember Barbara for her warmth, generous spirit, contagious enthusiasm and her deep care. I lost my wife, Sharon, a year and a half ago, and I’d like to think they are seeing each other again. Barbara will be deeply missed. We send much love to Joe, Michael and Brian and their families.

Barbara was so vibrant, warm, engaged, and engaging. It was an honor to serve with her on the Board for UNC Press, and to share with her a continuing love and concern for the future of UNC. Every time we met, I felt uplifted and inspired. I think I last saw her at an event for the Retired Faculty Association—even in her retirement, she continued to contribute to the UNC community. Deepest condolences to her family. Please know Barbara was admired and appreciated and that she will be missed.

Dr. Moran was such a genuine person and her enthusiastic positivity was uplifting to everyone in her sphere. She taught one the best courses I took in library school, "Seminar in Academic Libraries"; a nuts-and-bolts look at all aspects of the field. I still remember the professional and interpersonal lessons I learned from her. She was such an iconic presence at SILS and will be missed.

Dr. Moran was the sole reason I attended Library Science School at UNC. I was set to attend somewhere else until I received her call out of the blue one day. I remember our conversation well, and she called me again the second day to make sure I knew she was on the job. From that first phone call, through walking me through my graduate thesis, she was a top advisor and better friend. I’m grateful to have been one of her students and sorry to hear of her passing and I’m in prayer for the family.

I was fortunate to participate in a British Librarianship course program that Dr. Moran organized in June 2010. It was amazing. I still think fondly of my experience there. I am still connected to many of the friends who also participated in the program. In addition, in 2011, I visited North Carolina for a conference and Dr. Moran took the time to meet with me to talk about my work. She was so inspiring and supportive. I'm sorry to hear about this. Sending my condolences to her family.
