CHAPEL HILL
Cecil Murray Long (M/SGT Retired) age 85 went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,
January 25, 2013. He was born in Lincoln County, Georgia to I.R. and Sally Jane Jones Long.
He graduated from Rhinehardt Jr. College in 1946 and joined the Air Force. While stationed
with the R.O.T.C. at UNC, Chapel Hill, he completed his education with a B.S. degree in
Business Administration. Retiring after 20 years service in 1966, he joined the staff of Duke
Medical Center. After 24 years as Business Manager for the Psychiatric Dept., he worked part time as Business Mgr. of the Center for the Study of Aging for 14 years, retiring in 2004. He is
survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan Fields Long, daughter, Allison Long Morris,(wife of the late
Jerry W. Morris), Timberlake, NC, son, Brent Long (Marcie) of Blue Ridge, VA., brother, Milton Long,
Greenville, SC. Grandchildren, Taylor Morris, U.S. Navy, (Hawaii), Allie and Greyson Morris,
Chad Baldwin, Kalley, Caleb, and Karina Long. Preceeded in death by brothers, George and Romulus Long,
Washington, GA., Bill Long and Edwin (Skip) Long of SC, Sister, Dovie Moss, Perry, GA.
Cecil was active in the work of the Lord. He was instrumental in building Forest Grove Chapel
on U.S. 15-501 south of Chapel Hill. He was an elder and did much of the teaching for 30
years. He continued to be helpful in establishing the Chapel Hill Wesleyan Church for 12 years
and since 2001 until his illness, his attendence was in fellowship with Farrington Road Baptist
Church. In 1973 he was on the committee for the Billy Graham Crusade in Raleigh. He was
involved in Lay Witness Missions and spent many weekends traveling to different churches with
Dr. Bill Wilson's team. A fan of Southern Gospel music, he attended many concerts including
National Quartet Conventions and the Grand Ole Gospel Reunions. He was an avid golfer and a
Tar Heel fan. He will be remembered as a person that loved the Lord Jesus Christ, was a
wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and mentor for many people.
The family wishes to thank the staff of ComForcare, caregiver Michael Jeffers, all the staff of
Duke Hospital Pallative Care and the hospice staff of Hock Family Pravilion.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 28, 2013 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at Walker's
Funeral Home, 120 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC 27516.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Providence Friends Meeting
Church, 2054 Providence Church Road, Pleasant Garden, NC 27313.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Orange County Rescue Squad in
Carrboro, NC.
