Joyce W. Biggers Obituary

Chapel Hill, NC – Joyce W. Biggers of Chapel Hill passed away on January 13, 2020, at the age of 82.

Joyce Biggers was born in Mecklenburg County, NC, to her parents, Parks and Margaret Wilson, both deceased.  She graduated from Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (present day UNCG) in 1959 (red Jacket class) with a degree in Home Economics.  Joyce was a grade-school teacher in the early 1960’s and later, a CHCCS substitute teacher in the late 1970s and early 1980s, fondly referred to as “Aunt B.”  An avid sports fan, she enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play and coach various sports.  Being a true Tar Heel fan, during basketball season, Joyce shared with one of Paul’s patients, Woody Durham, where she’d go when the Tar Heels needed the tide of the game to change.  After their conversation, when listening to a game she knew the meaning behind the directive, “Joyce, go to the kitchen” or later, “Go where you go and do what you do” when he was announcing games. As any true Tar Heel, she would turn down the television and turn up the Tar Heel Sports Network.

Mrs. Biggers is survived by her children; Missy Biggers of Chapel Hill; Bill Biggers (Gretchen) of Carrboro;  Joy B. Walker (Thomas) or Burlington, NC; grandchildren: William Biggers, Trent Biggers, Anna Burchfield, Chelsea W. Newcomer (Nick), and Dusty Walker (fiancée Alayna).  She is also survived by nephews and nieces who enjoyed her eating with them at the “Kids’ Table” during memorable Christmas meals in Kings Mountain.  She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Paul Biggers, M.D..

A private, graveside funeral service was held Saturday, January 18, 2020.
