Evelyn's smile enriches the Chapel Hill Library Monday night book club. As a newcomer to the community, I felt welcomed. By her smile, inclusive manner and, of course, the stimulating points of reference which she brought to our discussions.
Thanks so much, Dawn and Nancy, for the invitation to browse her personal library! I loved your "favors" now added to the happy memories we share of your sweet mom!

I met Evelyn at the Seymour Senior Center, where she organized and introduced the monthly opera films with such enthusiasm and understanding; her presentations were always delightful and informative. So even though I experienced only a small part of her range of knowledge, I’m so glad I did; her spirit was contagious. She was a rare and very charming person, and I miss her.t

I only met Evelyn recently, but feel privileged to have known her. She impressed me as a wonderfully kind, thoughtful person who was joyful, alert and mindful of others even when she was so Ill. My condolences as she must be a tremendous loss to her family and many friends.

I knew Evelyn through several book clubs, the Shared Learning Association, and the Friends of the Chapel Hill Public Library. What a remarkable level of community involvement she had. I was truly inspired by her to broaden my reading and to work harder at finishing books I started. What I remember her for most, apart from her voracious reading, was that she always looked to understand and then enthusiastically explain to other people what she had learned. Also, at a drop of a hat, she was able to bring to any discussion other reading material that was relevant and important. I tried for two years to get her to join Shared Learning, and I'm glad I did and am appreciative of the fact that she seemed glad as well. And she always had a smile on her face.

I’m a member of the Proust class, one of the four (or more?) concurrent reading groups Evelyn was in. We are trying to process what it means not to be able to have a conversation with her anymore, to hear her laser-sharp comments, to probe her vast knowledge for some obscure fact (if she didn’t know, her smartphone would be whipped out and the information accessed in a millisecond), to help us plot our fantasy trip to Proust’s Paris (she was thumbs up on the group riding horseback through the Bois de Boulogne), to find out what books she was reading (the latest was a 1000-page book written as one sentence—eat your heart out, Proust!). One of the last classes she had with us was about a chapter from In Search of Lost Time called “Intermittences of the Heart” in which the narrator who lost his grandmother when he was younger, suddenly has a wrenching realization of what he has lost. But the chapter ends with a glorious paean to the apple trees in spring, “in full bloom, unbelievably luxuriant, their feet in the mire beneath their ball dresses, heedless of spoiling the most marvelous pink satin that was ever seen, which glittered in the sunlight.” That is how I envision Evelyn. Her memory is a treasured book to read and reread.

Your mom was a generous, kind, and thoughtful person. Always generous with praise, kind even with criticism, and thoughtful when responding to each person she encountered. I am a member of the Flyleaf book club and feel privileged to have known her. Please accept my condolences.

Ever kind, thoughtful, and searching, Evelyn lived a life to which I aspire. I have been lucky to share explorations of Dante with some of the greatest people in my life, and I am proud to add Evelyn to that group of stellar humans. I met Evelyn through Dante, but we shared her insight, intellect, and generosity of spirit on a journey exploring Milton, Homer, Aeschylus, and Faulkner. I am beyond sad to have to experience the rest of Faulkner without her contributions to a long-term conversation about life, death, and beyond. I will forever hold her as an example of how to live every day in search of truth and beauty.
My most sincere thanks to her family and friends for sharing her with us literary nerds. You have my deepest condolences, and I wish you a lifetime of wonderful memories and love.

I will always think of Evelyn's buoyant smile, sharp intellect, and easy laugh. She entered every class with a "Hello, my dears!" She was a mentor to so many of us at SILS. I am so grateful for all of my time with her, particularly her lessons on how to be a teacher. We also shared a love of dogs, and on occasion she watched my dog, Kirby, who adored her.

My dear Auntie Hope was brave, generous, full of life and full of fun, and devoted to her family. She was an animal lover, an intrepid traveler, always ready for an adventure, and by far the most well-read person I’ve ever known. I love her. I miss her. I am so grateful for her life and blessed that she was my aunt.

Evelyn was such a lively, exciting friend for me. We shared season tickets to Carolina Performing Arts for 5 great seasons. She was an amazing mentor and I dedicated more real estate in my dissertation acknowledgements to her than anyone else because she was such a powerful presence in my doctoral studies life.

I will never forget Evelyn's beaming smile and warmth. Nor will I forget her insatiable love of reading, her analytical abilities, and her uncanny knack for remembering and tying together many different literary threads. She was a very special woman.
In addition, I worked with Evelyn professionally and I will forever be in her debt for a very wise piece of advice she gave me upon retirement. I followed her sage advice and it led to a rewarding and meaningful volunteer role.
To her family, may I offer my sincere sympathy in the passing of one so beloved.

Evelyn was an extraordinary person, vivacious, brilliant, and caring, with a fierce love of knowledge, tart sense of humor, and incandescent spirit that drew us to her as acolytes to this high priestess of wisdom. She was the anchor and mainstay of our Great Books Club, whose unfailing warmth and vitality guaranteed that our meetings would be joyously stimulating and enlightening events. I'll miss her laugh, her smile, her wit, and her inimitable presence. Her death is a great personal loss and source of deep bereavement to us all.
With heartfelt condolences to Evelyn's family,

Evelyn started so many book clubs to offer the community at large a forum in which to engage on wide ranging ideas. Each group had a slightly different focus: the classics, popular fiction/non-fiction, Faulkner, Dante.....I was in four groups with Evelyn, but continually ran into folks in other clubs with her that I hadn't heard about. When pressed she admitted to reading about a book a day, but her favorite activity was engaging with others' ideas. She was a great listener and brought everyone into the discussion. Her positive, inclusive attitude, and wise wit will be missed. It's hard to imagine our book groups without Evelyn's guidance, but her love of books lives on in the many folks whose lives have been touched by Evelyn's engagement in our world.

Evelyn had a fine intellect, a generous spirit, and a smile that lighted the world around her. We enjoyed traveling together through the battlefields of Homer, the depths of Dante, and the heights of Milton. I am a richer person for knowing Evelyn...I will miss the world of ideas she so beautifully created.

My condolences go out to her family. I know she was beloved and she will be missed.
I have so many memories. Of her smile and intelligence and wit. Of the first time I heard her swear when I was her TA in the fall of 2007. Of her love of public libraries and librarianship. Of bonding over dogs and movies and the many Fridays we spent watching the latest art film. She is an example of what professors should be, and always, always, always, a hard new Englander.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of her passing. I'll miss her.

I knew Evelyn from the Flyleaf Book Club she lead. She was a kind, bright spirit who knew how to keep a lively, intelligent discussion going. An inspiration to all who knew her. She mentored me when I started my own neighborhood Book Club. She told me how important it was to make sure everyone had an opportunity to contribute to the conversation. Good advice! I'll miss her and her bright smile.

For those of us on a literary journey with Evelyn these past many years, she was always our muse and Virgil, leading us with her keen insights, biographical tidbits, and peripheral readings and studies in preparation for the main course. A more well-read person is hard to imagine; a more charming, exuberant cheerful and considerate companion is not possible.
All who knew Evelyn loved her and she will be missed by us all

I have so much affection for Dr. Daniel and it was a joy to see her and Margarita every day in Manning Hall. She always had more than one book she was reading at any given time, a great movie to recommend, a lecture she just attended that made her think of a book I should read. She was completely engaged in life and the people around her. I'm sad that we will not meet again to chat. She will always be missed. God speed Dr. Daniel.

Evelyn was an amazing and visionary woman. She was the person who changed the name of the then UNC “library school” to include the term “information”. From a personal perspective she hired me as an undergrad when she was Dean of the Syracuse Information School, she gave me a “free ride” so I could get my master’s degree there. She then moved on as Dean at UNC and hired me to help introduce technology into the school. She was an amazing mentor. It wasn’t just me either – she had a huge influence on so many others, people who are big names in the field. She loved working with students and had tremendous passion for teaching and outreach.
Evelyn was an amazingly hard worker, she just kept on going and going even into retirement. I always thought of her as the energizer bunny. And what a driver behind the wheel – she had her own rules, read books while driving, ran red lights and stop signs at a whim, all in her car with the INFOTOGO license. Wow, hang on if you were in the passenger seat!
This is truly a huge loss for not just UNC, but the profession in general. The contributions she made, which fundamentally changed the shape of information and library science education, won’t be forgotten. We will miss you Evelyn.
