Robert David McBroom, 84, of Mebane (formally Hillsborough) passed away late Thursday evening, October 24th, 2019 with loved ones by his side at The Hospice Home in Burlington where generous nurses and staff took great care of him.
He was the youngest of seven children, 5 preceded in death, born September 5th, 1935 in Hurdle Mills to the late Thomas Vernon and Lilly Ray McBroom. He was predeceased by his first wife of 46 years, the cherished Pattie Frances Wagner.
He started out as a baker working at Wholesome Bakery in Durham, then Tip Top Bakery in High Point, and later returning to Hillsborough to work at Broadway Bakery in Durham. After the birth of his son David, Robert went to work at White’s Furniture Company in Hillsborough where he worked until he retired to pursue his love for selling used cars. Robert is a long time member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Hillsborough and for a time served as a trustee and deacon. As a young husband and father, Robert enjoyed camping at the lake with family. He enjoyed classic country music, and it was at a local singing event where he met his beloved wife of 15 years, Lucy Kirby. Robert was an avid collector of clocks, watches, tea pitchers, and all things antique spending time at local auctions and estate sales in hopes of a rare find. Robert was an adored husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
Robert leaves to treasure his memory, his wife Lucy McBroom; son David McBroom (Robin); step-daughter Cheryl Durham (Jerry); grandchildren, Stacie Holsonback (Raymond) and Megan Phillips (Stephen); step-grandchildren, Chase Durham and Clayton Durham (Paige); great grandchildren Colin and Cameron Gilliam, Waylan and Weston Phillips; step-great grandchildren, Sophia and Bert Durham; sister, Frances Fox.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, October 28th at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Hillsborough with Pastor Ken Tilley officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the church.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the dedicated staff at The Hospice Home in Burlington and Alamance Regional Hospital.
The family has designated The Hospice Home in Burlington for memorial contributions.
