Charles Edward Jones, age 82 of Hillsborough, NC, went to meet his Lord and Savior on Sept. 24, 2019, surrounded by his loved ones.

Charles was born in Miami, Florida but spent many early years at military posts outside of the state, including six years in Germany immediately following WW II where he and his family were evacuated from Berlin during the Allied Airlift which allowed the city to survive the Soviet blockade.   During high school, he ran track in the stadium where Hitler had held Nazi rallies in Nuremburg, Germany during the war.  Returning to Florida he received an Associate Degree in Electronic Technology.

Serving in the U.S. Army in the early 60’s, he obtained the rank of Sgt earning an Expert Rifleman medal.  After retiring from Bell South, Charles became the V.P. of Marketing for Creekside Hideaway Vacation Rentals.  A quite humble man, he enjoyed his lifelong hobby for reading and taking long walks.  He had a gift for bringing joy to those he encountered as evidenced by the love shown by the many who cared for him in his final days.

He is survived by his sons, Humberto, Rick and Edward; his brothers, Reed Newell and Stephen; sisters, Frances and Lavinia; grandchildren, Amber and Austin.  Since 2014, he has been cared for by his niece, Leslie Fernandes and her husband Steve and their daughter, Claire (Age 12) who was Charles’ best friend.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Beatriz; his parents, Chaplain John H. Jones and Leila Jones.

A celebration of his life will be held at Calvary Road Baptist Church of Maggie Valley on Sept 30, 2019 at 11 A.M. followed by internment at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at Black Mountain, NC.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance – Caswell at 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC, 27215.
