Chapel Hill – Mr. Richard “Dick” George Clancy, Jr., husband of Bridget Mauro Clancy, died unexpectedly on August 14, 2019, at his home.

Mr. Clancy was born January 12, 1929, in New Jersey, the son of the late Beatrice Walsh and Richard George Clancy.  He was raised in the Marblehill area of Manhattan, attending P.S.7, and graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx.  Dick enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, and sports — especially baseball. He was a fan of his hometown teams, including the Mets, Knicks, Rangers, and Giants.  Before being drafted by the U.S. Army, he played semi-pro baseball.  Dick served during the Korean War, stationed in Japan.  He was employed for 46 years with the Continental Insurance Company in underwriting management, from which he retired in 1992.  He and his wife of 67 years regularly attended church and enjoyed square dancing together.  Before moving to the Chapel Hill area in 2015, he enjoyed working on his lawns and gardens at previous homes in Shrewsbury, N.J., Staten Island, N.Y., and Shrub Oak, N.Y.

In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by his sons, Rick Clancy, and his wife, Mary, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Ed Clancy and his wife, Sally, of Hilton Head, S.C.; as well as grandchildren, Richard “R.G.” Clancy, and his wife, Julia; Jenna Clancy; Dan Clancy and his wife, Megan; Erin Clancy; and his great granddaughter, Violet.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at 10:30am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael Drive, Chapel Hill, with inurnment to follow in the church columbarium.
