Ricardo Rodriguez posted a condolence
Sunday, January 2, 2022
My name is Dr. Ricardo Rodriguez from Panama. I met Dr. Gordon Flake when I worked with him in the Gorgas Hospital as a pathology assistant. At that time, I was a medical student. He was such a good person that I can never forget him. I remember the day when he invited me to eat lunch with him in the officers' dining room in the hospital. We had a great friendship. When I told him that my interest was to learn more English, we made a deal. He would speak to me in Spanish and I would speak to him in English. I also remember that he told me that he was going to marry a Panamanian and I told him that would be a good idea because I was also interested in marrying an American lady.
I passed a wonderful time with Dr. Flake. Our time together and his friendship had a deep impact in me and I continue to share my memories of him with my family.
I know that God is with him in Heaven. God Bless this good American man.

My deepest condolences in the loss of your beloved. Dr. Flake will be missed for many reasons, his service, education, and research; but for me, it’s how sweet and kind he was.
Rest In Peace my friend!

Gordon was an inspiring and dedicated pathologist. We considered him part of our "UNC Family". His unwavering support of the UNC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine was greatly appreciated. He never missed attending our educational conferences, and his gentle kindness was a model for us all. We will miss him very much.

Our most sincere condolences to Cristina, Derek, Heather, Stuart, Margo, Mandy and their families since Gordon will be missed very much!
Although Gordon was not necessarily a religious man, he exhibited many of the qualities that the Good Book encourages us to develop: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, mildness, self-control (Galatians 5:22,23). The qualities that he exhibited quite noticeably are two that the Good Book repeatedly emphasize: love (1Corinthians 13:1-2,4-8) and humility (Proverbs 15:33; 18:12; Colossians 3:12).
We pray that God (2 Corinthians 1:3,4) will comfort Gordon's loved ones in dealing with his loss.

I have nothing but love, admiration and good memories for my Uncle Gordon. I loved his close-lipped smile and bright eyes. He always showed humor and humility without judgement and made you feel totally comfortable - - even though he was one of the most intelligent people I've known. Love to his wonderful family that will embrace his legacy.

Jane & I send our condolences to all of Gordon’s family. We both were in his class in both Jr High and at Central High School. Jane (Teague) also went to grammar school with him and lived down the street on Shadow Lane. He was one of the nicest guys I ever knew and have fond memories of studying and playing golf together. We were not surprised and proud of his successful career. I’m sure he was a wonderful husband, parent and grandfather. We are both thankful that we got to spend time with Gordon at our 50th Central High Reunion and our class will miss him with fond memories at our 60th Reunion in October. Peace be with you.

Gordon was such a kind and gentle man, and most of all a most wonderful father. His love and patience with Derek, who we have known for many years through Special Olympics, was exceptional. We will miss you very much!

Gordon was a dear and truly noble person. He was the kindest and most considerate person I have ever met. I was fortunate to have worked on many NTP pathology projects with Gordon over the years. He was extremely intelligent and an excellent pathologist; he always did his very best and never left a stone unturned. He worked long and hard (as long as he had his Sheetz coffee latte in hand!). I relied on him often to help me work through diagnostic dilemmas. Gordon had an unquenchable thirst for all new developments in the health sciences and made a point of going to as many seminars as he could fit in around all his projects. Gordon had a great sense of humor and I enjoyed his "little stories" about events from his past. I also enjoyed hearing him talk so fondly of Christina and the kids/grandkids-it made me smile. I will miss him very much as will all his colleagues at NTP, CRL, ILS and EPL.
