Obituary of J.Neil Marshall
Dr. J. Neil Marshall CHAPEL HILL, NC - Dr. Joseph Neil Marshall, 89, of Chapel Hill, NC, died Thursday, March 1, 2018, at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, NC.
Born in Louisville, KY, on February 26, 1929, Dr. Marshall had worked as a neurologist in clinical practice and as a professor teaching residents and students at the Medical University of South Carolina from 1960-2011 and at the VA Medical Center in Charleston, retiring in 2012. During his career at MUSC, he held the ranks of Associate in Neurology, Assistant Professor of Neurology, and Professor of Neurology. He was named Professor Emeritus of Neurology at MUSC in 1997. He was board certified in neurology and psychiatry, and he specialized in the treatment of epilepsy and migraine headache. Dr. Marshall was the inaugural director of MUSC's EEG Laboratory. His department created the J. Neil Marshall Student Teaching Award in his honor at his retirement.
Dr. Marshall was educated in Louisville, Kentucky at Barret Middle School, Louisville Male High School and at the University of Louisville where he did undergraduate work and completed his degree in medicine. At the University of Michigan, he completed a neurology residency from 1956-1959 and a neurology fellowship in cerebrovascular disease from 1959-1960. He also served in the US Army National Guard.
Dr. Marshall spent much of his life on Kiawah Island and Edisto Island where he loved nature, boating, swimming and fishing. He was very close to his wife, children and grandchildren, and he loved being with his family's dog, "Beau". He was a life-long fan of the University of Louisville's Cardinals sports teams. He was a member of the Carolina Yacht Club and the Sea Island Yacht Club.
Dr. Marshall is survived by his wife, Darelyn "Lynn" M. Marshall of Chapel Hill, NC; stepson, Richard C. Harrill (Katie) of Chapel Hill, NC; stepdaughter, Catherine Harrill Hickenbottom (Scott) of Woodbridge, VA; stepdaughter, Elayne Harrill Cason of Mount Pleasant, SC; son, Ian Y. Marshall (Jill) of Mount Pleasant, SC; son, Edward O. Marshall (Susan) of Lexington, KY; and 7 grandchildren: Rose Harrill of Chapel Hill, NC; Alec Moore of Woodbridge, VA; Sarah Moore, of Woodbridge, VA; Shelby Cason of Mount Pleasant, SC; Lauren Marshall of Mount Pleasant, SC; Will Marshall of Mount Pleasant, SC; and David Marshall of Lexington, KY.
The familywill hold a private memorial service sometime in the future.
