Obituary of Richard Alton Carter

     Richard Alton Carter, 66, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep Tuesday, February 6th, 2018 at his home in Chapel Hill, NC. 
He was born January, 21st, 1952 in Spartanburg, SC to the late Betty and Fred Carter. 
     A native of Charlotte, NC, Richard met his first wife in 1972 selling daisies in Athens, GA. He worked at Underground Records with Pepper and owner Eric Brown being the originator of Schoolkids Records. He and Pauline owned Springfield Record Company February 25th, 1973-1975, Buffalo Records May 1975-1976 and Schoolkids Records July 1976-1979. During this time their daughter Betsy was born on May 22nd, 1976. She currently lives in Chapel Hill.
     On August 17th, 1981 Richard received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before moving to Atlanta, GA where he met Jon. They had three children Michael Alton Carter born August 3rd, 1986 who now resides in New Orleans, Haas Hart Carter born February 2nd, 1988 and Leigh Coleman Carter born November 28th, 1989 who both reside in Los Angeles. During this time Richard completed ten marathons including New York, Boston and Paris. 
     Prior to retiring in Chapel Hill, Richard worked in the Financial Services Industry for over twenty years. He completed his Master of Arts in Political Science on January 8th, 2010 from Georgia State University. He spent six years as manager of the bookstore at UNC Chapel Hill. He was an avid painter and has his work displayed at the Aloft hotel and many local stores in Chapel Hill.  Richard is survived by his four children, his brother Tony and his wife Sandra, niece, two nephews and countless friends. 
     Visitation was held on Sunday February 11th at Walkers Funeral Home in Chapel Hill from 2:00PM to 2:45PM. Services followed at 3:00PM and were officiated by Reverend Grace Hackney. Walker’s Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is honored to serve the Carter family.
