Obituary of Mildred Overby Stone
Please share a memory of Mildred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mrs. Mildred Stone, age 91, passed away peacefully on Friday December, 22 2017 surrounded by her family and caregivers. She was born February 5, 1926 to the late Marion B. Overby and Thelma Elizabeth Proctor Overby of Durham, NC. She was a 1943 graduate of Durham High School.
She worked in the medical field for Duke Hospital, UNC Hospital, and UNC Medical Science Teaching Lab in the surgical pathology department as a medical histology technician. During her 30-year career at UNC, she had the privilege of working with some of UNC’s leading physicians – among them Dr. Hubert Patterson, Dr. Walter Reese Berryhill, and Dr. William H. Huffines. Her work was interesting and fulfilling, and she especially enjoyed the energy, excitement, and interaction with each medical school class - she was a “true science girl”.
She was married to the late Chapel Hill Police Chief Herman L. Stone for 37 years who proceeded her in death in 1992. They both had a deep love for the town and the people of Chapel Hill, the Town and Gown collaboration, and all things UNC. They lived in Chapel Hill when it was a true village, and over the years saw many changes in the southern part of heaven.
In her retirement years, she enjoyed the family’s large vegetable garden, her flowers, azaleas, dogwoods, and attending UNC football and basketball games with her husband. In 2006, Mildred relocated to Raleigh NC to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law, Marian and Jerome Harrison. She loved being close to them, but always deeply missed her home and friends in Chapel Hill. In addition to her daughter and son-in-law, Mildred has a cousin Judy (David) Woods of Timberlake, NC.
A memorial service to honor the life of Mildred Stone was held at University United Methodist Church, 150 E. Franklin St, Chapel Hill, NC on Friday December 29th at 3:30pm, officiated by Rev. Justin Coleman. A reception at the Carolina Inn (211 Pittsboro St, Chapel Hill, NC) followed. A private burial was held at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery before the funeral.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Brighton Gardens in Raleigh, NC and Transitions Lifecare (formerly Hospice of Wake County) for the compassionate and loving care during her last months.
