ORANGE Alvis James Dixon CHAPEL HILL — Alvis James Dixon, 86, died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Chapel Hill Rehab. He had been in declining health for several years and had been in rehab after suffering a stroke on April 7, 2013. He was born in Durham county on June 7, 1926 and had lived in Orange county all his life. He worked as a farm hand early in life and later worked at UNC housekeeping and movers. He served in the US Navy in WWll. He married Ann Williams in 1949, had two sons, Kennth and Alvis Jr. He was an accomplished bluegrass musician and played with a band on a local radio program in the 1960s. He loved whittling and making clocks. He is preceded in death by his son, Jimmy and wife, Ann. He is survived by his son, Kennth Dixon of the home; a granddaughter, Jessica Dixon of Hillsborough; a sister, Zola Pendergraph of Chapel Hill; and several nieces and nephews. An informal memorial gathering will be held on Saturday May 18th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the home.
