Service at later date.Waldo Buford Ligett Jr. November 2, 1916 - December 16, 201 Waldo (Gus) Ligett, 97, passed away peacefully at Carolina Meadows, Chapel Hill, holding the hand of his wife, Ann, on December 16, 2013 Gus was born and raised in Middletown OH. He attended Antioch College, where he met his wife to be, Ann. After earning a bachelors degree from Antioch, Gus enrolled in the Purdue University PhD program as a Chemistry major. Gus and Ann were married in 1940 while he attended Purdue. Upon graduation, his PhD research led to a role in the Manhattan Project. Subsequently his career included employment at the Ethyl Corporation, Celanese Chemical Company and concluded as the President of the Franklin Institute Research Laboratories in Philadelphia. He enjoyed travel and traveled extensively during his career. One application for security clearance lists 19 countries visited in the prior 5 years. Upon retirement in 1981, Gus and Ann alternated between homes in Vermont and Florida until 1995 when they moved to Carolina Meadows. They continued to travel frequently during retirement. In addition, Gus was an avid swimmer, golfer and fitness buff. His scientific mind enjoyed the challenge of evaluating securities, so he successfully managed his own financial affairs even in his 97th year. In addition to Ann, Gus is survived by his sister Barbara Ligett, of Monroe OH; his 5 sons, Robert and his wife Shari Ligett of Chapel Hill, NC; John and his wife Carol of Charlevoix, MI; Mike and his wife Cathy Ward of Raleigh, NC; Steve and Doris Lamontagne of Thedford VT; Dan and his wife Susan Stefanec, of Amherst, NH; and 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; as well as the children and families of his late brother, Robert E. Ligett The family appreciates the skilled and compassionate care provided at Carolina Meadows. Memorial Service plans are not yet complete.
