Obituary of Annie Brown Talbert

Please share a memory of Annie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mrs. Annie B. Talbert passed away peacefully at Dubose Health Center in Chapel Hill on July 24, 2014. She was 'Mom' to three children, 'Mizz Talbert' to thousands of junior high school students, 'Coach' to hundreds of young athletes, and 'Annie B.' to friends and family. Annie B. spent her youth on the family dairy farm in Meadowview, Virginia with her four brothers and two sisters, and many cousins and friends nearby. Fun times included basketball games and trips to the swimming hole, but only after all the milk bottles were washed and put away. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Spurgeon (Martha Lee Love), Tom, Frank (Katherine Lester), and David (Alice Wagner), and her sisters Mary Catherine and Martha Belle. She earned her bachelor's degree from Radford College, and taught high school in Alexandria for two years. Annie B. married her childhood sweetheart, Luther Talbert, in 1948, and they moved to Charlottesville for Luke to complete a medical degree. Mrs. Talbert taught high school physical education and worked in the evenings as a referee for the recreation department. Children John, Luther and Cay were born in Charlottesville, and in 1958 the family moved to Chapel Hill. They quickly discovered the importance of attending football and basketball games if they wanted to be part of any social discourse. Annie B. and Luke were early members of the Olin T. Binkley Baptist church, where Annie B. taught Sunday school and worked in the nursery. Mrs. Talbert taught health and physical education at Guy B. Phillips Junior High School for over 20 years, and enjoyed coaching volleyball, basketball, soccer, and cheerleading. She was always pleased to see her former students, and was very proud of their accomplishments. She remained close to her colleagues from Phillips for life. Mrs. Talbert is survived by her children John (Cheryl), Luther (Hope), and Cay Bacon, grandchildren Ryan (Sunny) Talbert, Caytie Talbert, Molly Talbert, Kristine (Alex) Stewart, Luke Bacon, and Catherine Bacon, and great-grandchildren Jackson Talbert and Roman Stewart. Graveside services will be held at the Greenfield Baptist Church in Meadowview on Monday July 28 at 2:00 pm. Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is honored to serve the Talbert family.
