Walt was an important and treasured colleague and mentor in my early years on the history faculty of Garrett-Evangelical. He essentially developed the model for the required History II course that I adopted and have used over the years of my teaching. It was a vision of modern church history that was inclusive and world-wide in scope, with a central concern for intercultural sensitivity and human liberation as the mission of the church. Interestingly, for some reason Walt came to mind last week and I wondered where life had taken him. The obituary that is posted places in illuminating context the core commitments and emphases that infused Walt's teaching. I am grateful for having known him, having team taught with him, and having sat under his tutelage. Grace and peace be to his family.
