Obituary of Horace Ted Smith

HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Horace Ted Smith, 94, died Thursday, June 6, 2013. He grew up in Morganton, NC, where he graduated from Morganton High School. He worked in furniture manufacturing until December 4, 1940 when, as one of the first draftees from Burke County, NC, he entered into the U.S. Army. He served in WWII as a member of the 32nd Armored Regiment Maintenance Company, 3rd Armored Division, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He participated in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was decorated with 5 bronze service stars and the European Theater of Operations (E.T.O.) Ribbon. Following his return from Europe (WWII) in October 1945, he married his beloved wife Betty. They lived in Morganton, NC, until 1950 when they moved to Hillsborough. He was employed by White Furniture Company of Mebane as superintendent. He managed the Hillsborough operations from 1950 until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the Hillsborough United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the Buckhorn Gun Club, as well as a life member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association of America. In addition, he was a member of the NC Trapshooting Association Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the American Legion. Surviving is his daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Graves (Greg) of Mebane, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Taylor Smith. Special thanks and acknowledgement to all of the executive staff of Home Watch Caregivers of the Triangle and the individual caregivers: Sonya Corbett, Shirley Purdie, Francis Odima, Sharon Odima, Gary Clement, Cassandra Sanders, Cummie Davis, and Carol Horton for their devotion and care of Mr. Smith.
