Msgr. Matthew David Hendrick died peacefully in Southern Pines, NC, on February 27, 2015, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Msgr. Matt grew up in Chapel Hill, NC, as one of ten children to the late Philip Sr. and Mary Lou Hendrick. Msgr. Matt was a loving, patient and kind brother, priest and friend. He now joins his beloved parents and late brother Philip Jr. in heaven. Msgr. Matt was ordained as a Catholic priest for the Diocese of Raleigh in 1984. He served for two years as Associate Pastor for Immaculate Conception Church in Durham, N.C., followed by 18 years as Pastor of St. Mark's Catholic Church in Wilmington, NC. He then served two years as Pastor of St. Therese Catholic Church in Wrightsville Beach, NC.
Surviving are brothers Michael Stephen (Ellen) Hendrick of Stafford Springs, CT; Mark Gerard (Lisa) Hendrick of Wilmington, NC; John Patrick (Rieppe) Hendrick of Holly Springs, NC; and sisters Mary Louise (Thomas) Duddy of Kaneohe, HI; Margaret Anne (Richard) Cole of Jacksonville, NC; Kathryn Marie (Rick Hoffman) Hendrick of Lake Oswego, OR; Elizabeth Marie (late Carlton) Law of Marietta, GA; Martha Ann (Robert) Armstrong of Asheville, NC; plus 21 nieces and nephews and two grand-nephews.
We will remember Msgr. Matt on Thursday, March 5, at 6 p.m., at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill, NC. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 6, at St. Thomas More Church in Chapel Hill. Visitation will be 9:00am-10:30am followed by a Mass at 11:00am.
