Dorothy Province Fields
Dorothy Province Fields, beloved wife and mother, passed away at the age of 93 on July 5, 2015. Born in Irvine, Kentucky to James Henry Province and Vivian Page Province, Dorothy was orphaned at an early age and reared by extended family members in Russellville, KY; Detroit MI; and finally by Harry and Lena Welker in Whitesburg, KY. There she met her husband-to-be, Archie Reid Fields, a U.S. Naval Academy midshipman who was home on summer leave. The couple was married upon Archie's graduation and he was deployed shortly thereafter. Dorothy remained in Whitesburg with Archie's mother, Minnie F. Adams until War's end. After 20 years as the wife of a Naval Pilot, Dorothy looked forward to putting down roots in the South, so she and Archie moved their family of six from the West Coast to Chapel Hill, N.C., building homes on Poinsett and Arboretum Drives, respectively.
Dorothy's passions were her family and her love of God. She is survived by all four of her children, Patti Fields of Chapel Hill, NC, Alan Fields of Laurel Springs, NC, James (Cathy) Fields, Litchfield Ct. and Jennifer Fields Goss of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Jessica (Tim) Covington of Atlanta Ga., and Erica (John) Robinson of Winston Salem, NC, daughters of Alan and Linda Smith Fields; and Adam Goss of Denver, Co. son of Ed and Jennifer Goss; and two great-grandchildren, Townes and Emma Grace Covington.
Services will be held with only family members in attendance at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 2016 Mt. Carmel Church Road, Chapel Hill, NC on Thursday July 9. Visitation will be held at the church between 1pm and 2pm followed by a funeral service at 2:00pm. A grave-side gathering will follow at Mt. Carmel-Sparrow Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is honored to serve the Fields family.
