Dear Nahale and Nondos,
You may not remember me. After all, you were newlyweds when I moved away. Your mother was the very best friend a person could ever have. I did not do a great job of keeping up with her because we lived so far away. Yet, when I needed an inspiration for graceful generosity and compassion, there was your mother's smile. She was a unique spirit that God sought to bless all of us with for too short a time.

My dearest Donna, I said goodbye to you yesterday but you will forever live in my heart and mind. I have lost my 'sister friend' and my heart is broken. Now, I only have our many memories and photos which I will always cherish. I will miss our texting and our phone conversations, and remember the many visits to Hillsborough when we talked and reminisced for hours over several glasses of wine. I am still in shock and cannot believe I have lost you. Goodnight my precious friend…. I love you, Terry

I have such good memories of the Freeland family. They were my neighbor when I was growing up. Jack was like my brother, we remained friends throughout the yrs. Donna was the typical big sister.always taking care of her baby brother. She was the life line of the family. My Mom was in a head on collision 3 yrs. Ago. When Donna found out she sent my mom a card weekly. Donna was such a selfless caring individual. I thank the Freeland family for the wonderful memories. Donna will be greatly missed.

Beyond the tears, there is a smile of the vision Donna captured in all who knew her. She carried this essence of beauty and kindness that was refreshingly natural and effortless.
Our families go back eight generations here in Orange County. The relationship was always one of genuine friendship and mutual respect. Donna extended that friendship to me and I will be forever grateful for experiencing the joy of knowing her.
My deepest sympathies to her beautiful and loving family.

Sorry to hear about the passing of your loved one. May the comforting promises from God ease your pain during this difficult time. One of which is found at Isaiah 25:8. There it says "He will swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces."
Again, please accept my sincere condolences for your loss.

Donna Freeland: A Legacy To Be Proud Of
One of the last cherished moments I had with Donna Freeland was just last month, when I shared with her the results of careful research that showed that she and her daughter, grandchildren, nephews and nieces were all related to the equivalent of "American royalty" -real Revolutionary war heroes who helped America become a free nation.
In the waning days of the Revolutionary War, newly elected Governor Thomas Burke in the summer of 1781 vowed to put an end to loyalist forces who continued to wreak havoc on behalf of the British in North Carolina. Governor Burke had had a distinguished career prior to assuming the office of Governor in June 1781. He had helped write the state's constitution in 1776. He had served in the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, representing North Carolina from 1778-1781. He was a renaissance man who was also poet, a doctor, and dedicated patriot. He had a home in Hillsborough, the de facto provincial capitol of North Carolina before Raleigh became the fixed capitol in 1792.
In the Fall of 1781, Burke and a number of North Carolina leaders of North Carolina's provincial government were in Hillsborough when it was attacked by a large and well-armed force of Loyalist soldiers aligned with the British, under the command of David Fanning (no relation to Edmund Fanning of Hillsborough notoriety.) Realizing that Hillsborough was lightly guarded, Fanning devised a daring plot to capture and kidnap the Governor and other leaders of North Carolina in the brazen belief that in so doing, he would undermine resistance in North Carolina. In fact, the opposite occurred. But he didn't know that when he attacked Hillsborough in the early morning hours of September 12, 1781.
Outnumbered and caught by surprise, the militia guarding Hillsborough bravely fought back in vain. In a matter of hours, the attack was over and the governor and top leaders were taken prisoner. Moved to South Carolina as a hostage, Governor Burke would later make a daring escape from St. James Island in January 1782 and return to North Carolina and resume his duties as governor.
But not everyone was so fortunate. In the Battle of Hillsborough, a number of brave patriotic American soldiers died defending the city they loved. One of those was Thomas Freeland (1753-1781), 28 years old. Thomas was the son of James John Freeland, Sr. (1730-1805), recognized by the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) as an authentic "Patriot" for his role in the American Revolutionary War.
150 years later, a direct descendant of James John Freeland, Sr. (and his namesake) would play a pivotal role as a builder and developer in Hillsborough's modern history and a patron of its history who was the "Walt Disney" visionary behind the Daniel Boone development and preservationist behind so many other beloved Hillsborough historical sites. And Donna's dad was no slouch when it came to history. He loved it and thoroughly researched it, too.
That's how Donna's dad knew that Daniel Boone, one of his personal favorites, hadn't just passed by Hillsborough. He had actually visited Hillsborough many times because he was employed by Judge Henderson of Hillsborough in colonial times on behalf of what was called, the "Transylvania Company" to lead settlers to occupy and settle that part of the country we now call Kentucky. There's even a monument in the center of Hillsborough in front of the Old Courthouse on King Street that honors that effort by Daniel Boone. It's just down the street from the Colonial Inn, which Donna's dad and mom owned and successfully ran briefly back in the 1970s.
I will be forever grateful to Donna for her generosity of spirit sharing her stories and memories of her family and Hillsborough. She loved her family and friends and Hillsborough history, too. We always seem to pick up in mid conversation and there was always laughter and great memories. I was always left wanting to know more. Well, now we do!
