Thomas Johnston

Judge Thomas David Johnston (Retired), age 86, a resident of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, died on September 21, 2015. He was born and grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and from the UNC School of Law. While a student he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. Following graduation, he served as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, California. From there he went to work for the National Labor Relations Board where he held various legal positions in Washington, D.C. and the Board's Regional Offices in New Orleans, Louisiana, Tampa, Florida, and Los Angeles, California. During 1971 he was appointed by the Board as an Administrative Law Judge in Washington, D.C. and held that position until he retired in 1987. After retirement he served as an arbitrator through the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. He served in the United States Air Force in World War II and the Korean War and retired as a Colonel in the office of the Judge Advocate General. Mr. Johnston was predeceased by his parents Julius C. and Ruth W. Johnston of Fayetteville, North Carolina and by his brothers Jimmy W. Johnston of North Charleston, South Carolina, and Richard A. Johnston of St. Petersburg, Florida. He is survived by his wife Dorothy A. Johnston and daughter Sharon A. Johnston of Cary, North Carolina, and sons Thomas D. Johnston Jr., and wife Yvette B. Johnston, of Harvey, Louisiana, and Stephen C. Johnston of Atlanta, Georgia, and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Johnston of Texas. Graveside funeral services and burial will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers those persons wishing to make a donation should do so to a charity of their choosing. Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is honored to serve the Johnston family.
