Ruth Whitney Shipe Monk passed away on March 29, 2018 at the SECU Jim and Betsy Bryan Hospice House in Pittsboro NC. A native of Coral Gables FL, Mrs Monk was a graduate of Coral Gables High School, Hollins College (BA-Art History) in Hollins VA, and the University of Miami (MBA-Marketing) in Coral Gables FL. Mrs Monk had lived in Chapel Hill NC since 1986 and had been a volunteer for several local organizations including the Interfaith Council of Social Services and the American Red Cross. She was also a founding member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Durham NC. Mrs. Monk is survived by her brother, Paul E Shipe, Jr., and her children: Susan M Campbell (husband David Campbell, son Timothy Campbell), Dwight W Monk, Elizabeth S Monk, and Louise M Johnson (husband Rodney Johnson, son Benjamin Johnson, daughter Meredith Johnson). Mrs Monk was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Edgar Shipe of Herndon PA and Bessie Grace Whitney Shipe of Augusta GA, and her husband, Dwight Shields Monk. A memorial service was held on Saturday April 14th at 11:00am at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Durham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd or to a favorite charity. Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is handling the arrangements.
