Jean Ray

The jewel of our family, Russell Jean Batton Ray, 83, passed away peacefully Friday, January 31, surrounded by loved ones.

 Survivors include her beloved husband of 67 years, Bryan; brother, Kent Batton; daughter, Robbin Denise Ray-Eiland and husband, Dave; grandchildren, Shey Eiland-Scott and husband Andrew, and Dylan Eiland; great-grandchildren, Thomas, Andrew, Jacob, and Lucas; and many cousins, nephews, and nieces. Jean is preceded in death by her parents, Jewel Thompson Harrelson and Douglas Batton; her brother, Andy Batton; and great-grandson, Ryan Scott.

 Born December 5, 1941, Jean was a Hillsborough native and true southern lady. She retired in 2020 after working for optometrists, Dr. Blake Alexander (Hillsborough and Durham, 42 years) then Dr. Bruce Pate (Durham Vision, 15 years).

 Known for her caring disposition, Jean unconditionally loved everyone especially children, was a special forever-friend to many, a living testament to God’s grace. She enjoyed dining out with family and friends at her favorite restaurants, trips to West Jefferson and Colonial Williamsburg, shopping, and getting her hair done weekly. Always welcoming visitors, Jean insisted on sending guests home with leftovers of her home cooking. She was known for her delicious pound cakes. Her telephone expertise was unparalleled.

 “Russell”, “Mom”, “Jean”, “Penny Ann”, “Mrs. Ray”, “G. G. Maw” leaves a hole that no one can ever fill. We know that she is already first in her class in heaven’s angel school.

Her love and light will shine forever in our hearts.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2025, from 1:00pm until time of service at Walker's Funeral Home, 204 N. Churton St., Hillsborough, NC 27278. 

A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at 2:00PM at the funeral home with Reverend David Bolick officiation. 

Burial will follow the service at Phillips Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Haw River, NC.
