Ruby Martin

Ruby Yarboro Martin passed away in her home in Hillsborough, N.C., Sunday, July 28, 2019 at the age of 96. The wife of Ted H. Martin was born March 27, 1923 in Person County as the oldest child of Russ G. Yarboro and Lessie Watson Yarboro. She is survived by her husband Ted, children Ann Morton Owen (Bobby) of Southport; George Morton, Benecia, Calif. and Cindy Martin, Hillsborough; grandchildren Mitzi Clayton Kerr of Roxboro and Russell Clayton of Southport; and two great-grandchildren, Kelly Kerr Garrettson of Thomasville, and Allison Clayton of Southport. Ruby graduated from the Watts School of Nursing serving 25 years as a licensed practical nurse at Watts Hospital. She and Ted have been active members of the St. Mary's community where they operated the family dairy farm. She became a member of Pleasant Green United Methodist Church in 1954 serving on various committees and in numerous leadership roles including the choir and United Methodist Women. She found great joy in her family and in church, and was known for breaking out in song on any occasion. In the midst of adversity, she was known to exhibit great strength and immense hope. She is preceded in death by her husband Irvin George Morton, and siblings Samuel Edward Yarboro, Mary Frances Clayton, Russ G. Yarboro, Jr., Marshall Watson Yarboro, and Eglantene Yarboro Long. She is also survived by sisters Clarious Blalock, Shelby Dixon, Hilda Seamster, and Kay Blackard, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A service of celebration of Ruby's life will be held 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 31 at Pleasant Green United Methodist Church, 3005 Pleasant Green Road, Durham, N.C. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be Laura Thompson, pastor. Committal and burial will be at the church cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Pleasant Green United Methodist Church or Duke HomeCare and Hospice. Walker's Funeral Home, Hillsborough, is providing funeral arrangements.
