Robert "Wesley" Mangum, 87, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family and loved ones on Thursday, Feb. 27th. Wesley is predeceased by his parents, John Wesley Mangum and Verlia Cates Mangum, his son, Jeffrey Reid Mangum, his daughter, Susan Diane Mangum, and his great-grandson, Colton Wade Mangum. Wesley is survived by his loving and loyal wife of 67 years, Janie Baldwin Mangum, his son Robert Anthony "Tony" Mangum (Donna), his daughter Gayle Mangum Kirk (Mark), his son Gregory Wade Mangum (Brenda), six grandchildren, John Wesley Kirk, Kayce Jeffries (Dean), Kelly Mangum, Sheila Mangum, Joseph Mangum, and Kiley Mangum-Smith (Joe), six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Wesley is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Dolores Draughon and his brother, Dennis Warden Mangum, one nephew and three nieces.
Wesley was involved in multiple clubs, offices and societies during his high school years and was voted "Most Dignified" in the senior superlatives. He graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1955. Upon graduation, Wesley became employed by Cone Mills Eno Plant in Hillsborough, NC. He worked his way up into supervisory positions and was liked and respected by his peers and employees. Once the mill closed, he then transferred to the Haw River location until he retired in 1989.
After retirement, Wesley pursued a new career in law enforcement. At the age of 57, he trained with students half his age. He was very proud to finish in the top of his class. Wesley enjoyed his years of employment with the Orange County Sheriff's Department. He was respected by all, and was proud to serve his community. He retired after 10 years of service in September of 2001.
Wesley farmed most of his life raising angus cattle, swine, and boer goats. Upon his retirement from law enforcement, he focused on hay production.
Wesley will truly be missed and remembered by many.
A visitation will be held at Walker's Funeral Home in Hillsborough on Sunday, March 2, from 1pm to 3pm. Funeral services will follow at Union Grove United Methodist Church from 3:30pm to 4:30pm with interment at the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are:
Mark Kirk, John Wesley Kirk, Dean Jeffries, Joe Smith, Joseph Mangum, and Wade Alexander.
Honorary Pallbearers are:
Robert Anthony "Tony" Mangum and Gregory Wade Mangum.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Duke Hospice for the kind, compassionate care they extended to our loved one, Wesley, and our entire family.
