Robert Davis

HILLSBOROUGH - Robert D. Davis, 88, passed away Sunday, February 17, 2013, after a brief illness. Robert was an active member of Mars Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 46 years and as the church treasurer for 38 years. He retired September 30, 1987, from Western Electric and AT&T after 40 years of service. Robert was a member of the Lion's Club since 1974. He served as a volunteer at Orange Congregations in Missions for ;more than 20 years, including nine years on the Board of Directors, delivering Meals on Wheels, and stocking the food pantry. In 1995, Governor Jim Hunt presented Robert the Governor's Award for his outstanding service as a volunteer. Robert was also a member of the ROMEO Club (Retired Old Men Eating Out) and greatly appreciated the fellowship of these wonderful friends. Robert loved making baskets and enjoyed giving his hand-made baskets as gifts. \ Robert was the youngest son of John Archie Davis and Lillie Smith Boggs Davis. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edith Hawkins Davis; their four daughters, Sue Davis Lawless (Thomas) of Raleigh; Faye Davis Granberry (John) of Mobile, AL; Lisa Davis Olsen (Jason) of Boston, MA; Amy Davis Johnson (Warren) of Durham; one son Paul Michael Davis (Sharon) of Hillsborough; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother Frank Judson Davis of Hillsborough; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his sisters Bessie Boggs Cates, Belva Grace Boggs Collins, and his brothers Luther Curtis Boggs, Cashe Smith Boggs, and John Lewis Davis. Visitation will be at Walker's Funeral Home in Hillsborough Saturday, February 23rd at 5-8 PM . Funeral services will be held at Mars Hill Baptist Church on Sunday, February 24th at 3 PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
