Phillip Whitaker

Phillip Stewart Whitaker of Hillsborough NC died on March 11, 2015. He was born in Durham NC on December 10, 1942 to the late Lendo Edgar Whitaker, Sr. and the late Clarice Shambley Whitaker. He was predeceased on February 22, 2015, by his only sibling, brother Lendo E. Whitaker, Jr. Phil was educated in the Durham Public Schools and earned both BA & MPA degrees from his beloved UNC-Chapel Hill. He worked with Burlington Industries in Durham & Rocky Mount before beginning a career in municipal government. He served as Finance Director & Assistant Town Manager in Carrboro, and as Manager of the Towns of Marshville, Edenton and Hillsborough NC. He retired from the Trust Department of CCB in Durham. Phillip is survived by his wife, Janet Morris Whitaker; sons Derek & wife Julie Cappellano of Boston, and Gregory & wife Jennifer Gierisch of Durham; grandchildren Quincy, August, Theodore & twin girl & boy expected in the summer. Friends and family will remember Phil on Monday, March 23, 3:00 pm, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3639 Old Chapel Hill Rd, Durham NC. Visitation will follow the service.
