Nanette Wood Fields, loving wife, devoted mother, grand and great grandmother, businesswoman, and friend to so many, passed away quietly and peacefully on July 30, 2024. She was born on March 12, 1926, to Felix Weaver Wood and Odessa Nanette (Harkins) Wood in Birmingham Alabama. She graduated from Phillips High School and attended Howard Collage (now Samford University), The University of Alabama, and the University of North Carolina. She was married to Walter Geddie Fields Jr. on Christmas day in 1946 and moved to Chapel Hill. There she raised a family of three children, worked in numerous occupations from managing her husband’s construction business to becoming a founding partner of a real estate firm. She was honored as Realtor of the Year and was president of the Chapel Hill Board of Realtors among her many accomplishments.
Nanette is survived by her children Walter Geddie Fields III, Patricia Fields Neubert, and Melinda Nanette Fields, her Granddaughter Odessa-Nanette W. Fields and her great granddaughters Patterson Lange Fields and Rylee Crawford Fields and their mother Kimberly Crawford Fields.
A gathering of friends and family to celebrate her life will be held at Binkley Baptist Church located at 1712 Willow Drive, Chapel Hill, NC on Tuesday August 6th with a greeting and viewing at 2:00, the service at 2:30 and a reception following the service. Interment at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery will follow the reception. Her family would ask that in lieu of flowers or other tributes, a donation be made in her name to the Chapel Hill Historical Society that she supported for many years or the Phi Mu Foundation.
