Muhamet (Matt) Hito

1942 - 2024

Our Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Friend, Muhamet Hito passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, February 6th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at UNC Hospice care.

A proud American citizen, Muhamet was born in Vlora, Albania on January 17th, 1942. He was the fifth of six children born to parents Rexhep & Hatixhe Hito. His father was a pharmacist who opened the first modern pharmacies in Albania. Muhamet followed in his father’s footsteps and studied medicine, earning his Medical Doctor degree from the University of Tirana Medical School in 1970.

In 1970 he married his wife Natasha. Together they settled in Tirana where they raised their two sons, Gent and Tony. Muhamet was a highly respected doctor as a General Practitioner and Pediatrician.

When Mother Teresa came to Albania in 1991 and opened homes for the elderly and disabled, Muhamet was the first Albanian volunteer doctor to assist in her mission.

He was well known and appreciated for the time and care he gave to his patients, especially his bedside manner and his unfailing willingness to make house calls at any time, day or night. Everyone, including his immediate family, affectionately called him “Doctor”. He charmed all he met with his with his quick wit and humor.

In 1995 the family immigrated to North Carolina where their elder son Gent was living and working. He adapted quickly to his new home and country. He worked briefly at UNC Medical School and UNC Hospitals before retiring.

When their sons married and started their own families, Muhamet became a doting grandfather. He spent as much time as possible with his grandsons teaching them any and everything, swimming, chess, music appreciation, and the importance of integrity and hard work, always encouraging each one of them to become a doctor.

Muhamet is survived by his wife Natasha, sons Gent and Tony, daughters-in law Anila and Dita, and grandsons George, Martin, Adrian, & Eric. He will be dearly missed by his family and live on forever in their hearts.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at UNC Hospitals, and particularly UNC Hospice in Pittsboro for their tender care & consideration during his final days.

Viewing will be at Walker’s Funeral Home in Hillsborough, NC, between 1pm and 3pm on Thursday, February 8th, with burial to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
