Mary Ellen Scarlett

Mary Ellen Carden Scarlett of Hillsborough, NC passed away peacefully at home Monday, January 30, 2023 after declining health at 100 years of age.

Mrs. Scarlett was born July 20, 1922, to George Crawford Carden and Georgia Morris Carden at their home on Occoneechee Street in Hillsborough. She married Calvin Laster Scarlett in 1945. Mrs. Scarlett was a wonderful mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother.

She is survived by their four children, Calvin Ronald Scarlett (Yvonne), Karen Faith Scarlett Jordan (Frederic), Gerald Elmore Scarlett, Donnie Eugene Carden (Willie), 9 grandchildren, 3 great granddaughters, 3 step grandchildren and 5 step great granddaughters and one sister, Alice Redman, of Killeen, Texas and many, many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved very much. She is preceded in death by her husband, Calvin, sisters Nellie Scarlett, Pearl Scarlett, Margaret Yarborough, Dorothy Walker, Anna Kiker, Frances Watts, Annie Dodson, and brothers Charles Carden, Herbert Carden, George Thomas Carden and Billy Carden.

She was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church and, even after moving into a nursing facility, supported them as if she were in attendance. Thank you to the young men who held Sunday School at the nursing facility.

Although she loved flowers and spent many hours in her large yard, she asked that no flowers be sent in her memory but rather donations go the Baptist Children’s Home of NC. Their address is P O Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361-9911.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Walker’s Funeral Home, 204 N. Churton Street, Hillsborough, NC followed by the service at 11:00 am in Walker’s Chapel. A private family burial will be held in the family cemetery.
