Mary Mooney

CHAPEL HILL — Mary Alice Mooney, 74, passed away Friday, May 4th at home, surrounded by her family, after an extended illness. Alice was born in Chatham County to the late John M. Smith and Bertha Lee Smith. Alice was the eldest of eight brothers and sisters. Alice retired from UNC with 30 years of service. Alice enjoyed cooking and fishing but more than anything she enjoyed time with family. Alice is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Andrew L. Mooney and three children; Preston Mooney, Vickie Holleman and husband Mike, Jeff Mooney and wife Sherrie; three grandchildren, Ryan Holleman and wife Tammy, Chase Holleman, and Christian Holleman. Alice was preceded in death by her brother Ronald Smith. She is survived by her sisters and brothers, Carolyn Kilpatrick (Larry Cate), Charles Smith (Jackie), Lee Smith (Patsy), Diane Cates (Mike), Gail Bryant (Dean), and Kenny Smith (Yvonne) and her sister in law Alice Freeland. Visitation will be Monday, May 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 8 at 11 a.m. at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 549 Erwin Road, Durham. Serving as pallbearers Scott Merritt, Phillip Nasseri, Daniel Tripp, Tim Leferrier, Kenny Stewart, and Shawn Ellis. The family would like to express special thanks to loving family and friends. In particular, Helen Brasington (aunt), Shirley Mauer (cousin), Dawn Ward (niece), Dr. David Fisher, and UNC Home Health's Laura Nowicki, and Annie McIver for their loving care.
