Mary Ellen Horne, 92 (Known to her family and friends as Grannie), passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at UNC Hospital-Chapel Hill. She was born in Orange County, North Carolina on December 21, 1928, to the late Willie Stroud Ward and Mittie Lloyd Ward. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years Charles Harold Horne Sr. and her brothers Andrew (Louise), Lloyd (Reba), William (Alice), Howard (Lula Mae) and Robert. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed her adventures and finds at the local Thrift Shops with relatives and friends. Mrs. Horne had a very large heart, helped many people throughout her years. Survivors include her sons, Charles Harold Horne Jr. (wife Mae) and Kenneth Ward Horne (wife Linda) of Chapel Hill; Grandchildren, Tim Horne, Lisa Clatworthy (husband Michael), Chris Horne (wife Laura), Kelley Horne (husband James), Daniel Horne; Great-grandchildren, Kyle Carlson, Taylor Gilson, Eli Horne, Knox Horne, Amaya Horne, Charlie Horne, Carter Zorn, Adilyn Zorn, Deacon Zorn, Cooper Horne and Cora Horne. A graveside service will be held at Westwood Cemetery, Carrboro on Saturday, August 21 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Albert Williams officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made in honor of Mary Ellen Horne to the charity of one’s choice. The family is being assisted by Walker’s Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.
