Mary Gillespie

Mary Kathryn Weikel Gillespie passed away at 12:30 on Wednesday August 23rd, 2017. Kathryn was the only child of the late Ralph Waldo and Atwith Weikel. On August 13th, 1963, Kathryn married Frederick Jennings Gillespie, who passed away in December of 1984. She was devoted to the welfare of children and worked for many years as the director of day care services at First Presbyterian Church in Durham NC and later as a social worker for Orange County Department of Social Services until she retired in 2001. She is survived by her two sons: Frederick Jennings Gillespie Jr and John Preston Gillespie. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday September 2nd at the Episcopal Church of the Advocate with a graveside service to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery, where she will rest beside her beloved husband Fred. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to the Charles House Association at 7511 Sunrise Rd Chapel Hill NC 27514 or at www.charleshouse.org in honor and appreciation for the extraordinary love and care the staff at Winmore Eldercare Home and The Charles House provided Kathryn in the last three years of her life.
