John Irwin

John "Possum" Howard Irwin, age 72, peacefully passed away on March 11, 2017. He was born in Chattanooga, TN on October 13, 1944. Prior to his retirement he was employed 31 years with the Orange County Sheriff's Department and the Hillsborough Police Department. He served 3 years active duty in the U.S. Army as a Military Police Officer. John is survived by his wife of 52 years Jan Knox Irwin, daughter Jackie Irwin Cannada, son-in-law Scott Cannada and 3 precious granddaughters Amber, Sydnie and Jordan. Also surviving are his sisters Vera Stubblefield and Charlene Miller. John is preceded in death by his parents Chester and Rose Irwin, brother Perry Irwin and sister Elnora Hughes. A funeral service will be conducted at Hillsborough First Baptist Church on Monday March 13 at 2:00 pm followed by a visitation. Burial will be at the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Masonic Home for Children at 600 W. College St, Oxford, NC 27565 or Hillsborough First Baptist Church.
