Jewell Hogan Altemueller

Jewell Hogan Altemueller passed away peacefully at her home on April 1, 2022 at the age of 99. She was born in Chapel Hill to Willie S. Hogan and his wife Jessie Moore Hogan. She graduated from Chapel Hill High School and in 1945 she earned a Bachelors degree in Psychology from UNC Chapel Hill. She had a satisfying administrative career at the University working in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Summer Session Office and for the Office of General Administration. She also worked for several years for Northwestern Mutual Insurance and the Danziger Enterprises in Chapel Hill.

Jewell enjoyed travelling with her husband and friends overseas and in the US. She and her husband liked to take their recreation vehicle to the beach and to visit relatives. They also renovated historical houses in Chapel Hill and Wilmington, including her father’s family farmhouse in Chapel Hill. She was an avid shopper and was delighted when one of her trips included an excursion to local stores.

Jewell is preceded in death by her husband Armin John “Red” Altemueller, her parents and sister Jean Erber. She is survived by her children Alan Altemueller and Anna Terry, grandchildren Megan Terry and Jason Terry and greatgrandchild Jason Terry Jr. along with several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at Walker’s Funeral Home on Sunday, April 10, 2022 from 7pm-8pm. A Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated on Monday, April 11, 2022 at 10:00 am at the St. John Fisher Chapel on the South Campus of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 632 Laurel Hill Road, Chapel Hill NC. A private interment will follow. Due to the Lenten season, flowers should be sent to Walker’s Funeral Home.
