Janet Liegl

January 11, 1948 — January 15, 2016

Janet (Jan) Liegl died at her home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on January 15, 2016, surrounded by family and friends. She had just turned 68 on January 11. Jan was born in 1948 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, the only child of Joyce and James Meyer. The family later moved to Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. Jan went to high school at Oakfield High School, where she met her future husband of 46 years, Joseph (Joe) Liegl. After high school, Jan trained to become a licensed practical nurse. Jan and Joe were married February 1, 1969. Over the years of their marriage Jan was employed as a nurse and later as an ophthalmic technician in Wisconsin, Maryland, and Ohio. Jan and Joe had two sons, Matthew Liegl (age 43, of Hudson, OH and spouse of Kim Liegl), and Jeremy Liegl (age 40, San Francisco, CA, and spouse of Julie Liegl). She had three grandchildren, Gavin (age 11), Jane (3), and Emma (10 months). Jan loved people, and people loved Jan. She loved to hug folks, out of gratitude or affection, but mostly out of love. She lived for visits with her sons, their spouses, and her grandchildren. And she loved long talks with her friends. Jan was preceded in death by her parents. A celebration of her life is now being planned. Her cremated remains will be held by Joe until his death, at which point their remains will be buried together in Oakfield, Wisconsin, at a cemetery half a mile from where they met in high school, and on the same plot on which Jan's parents are buried. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center through the hospital's website at http://gifts.mdanderson.org/
