Harry Hall

January 20, 1921 — May 30, 2014

-Chapel Hill- Harry Hobart Hall - "Hobie" to family and friends - died on May 25, 2014 at the age of 93. He was a native of Dothan, AL and recent resident of Chapel Hill, NC. Harry is preceded in death by his father, Harry H. Hall Sr., his mother, Gertrude Hall and his beloved wife Jane Sumpter Hall whom he wed in 1950. He is survived by his sister-in-law Janice Humphreys and his niece Sandra Alexa. Harry graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned M.A. and PhD. Degrees from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee. A five-year veteran of World War II, he was a trombonist and arranger in various service bands as well as in his later capacity as a professor of music at Shorter College in Rome, Georgia. Harry was the published author of "A Johnny Reb Band from Salem," a history of Moravian music during the Civil War era. From the late 1950s through the early 1990s, Hall served as music consultant for the Moravian Music Foundation in Winston-Salem. As avid lovers of all animals, Harry and his wife Jane raised purebred Doberman Pinscher show dogs for many years. His dogs, including his most recent companion Katar, were considered much-loved family members. Harry will be fondly remembered for his wit, humor and never-ending passion for music and animals. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd at 2:00 PM at Evergreen Cemetery, 1307 Summit Ave SW in Roanoke, VA. Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is honored to serve the Hall family.
