Gertrude Borland

Cedar Grove - Gertrude P. Borland, age 89, of Cedar Grove, North Carolina, daughter of the late Jeff Parker and Bessie Clayton Parker, earned her wings on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at her home, following an extended illness. Gertrude is survived by her husband of 72 years, Sam W. Borland, children, Dianne Borland Brown (husband Kenneth, deceased), Sammy Borland and wife Betty C., Steve Borland, Betty Borland, Bobbi Borland Cabe and husband Mac, Sandy Borland Rimmer and husband Darryl, and Wendy Borland. 10 grandchildren: Todd Brown, Travis Brown and wife Naomi, Jeffrey Borland and wife Jamie, Kyle Borland and wife Shannon, Stephanie Borland, Billy Riddle and wife Kristen, Johnathan Riddle, Josh Hudson, Zachary Rimmer and Garret Rimmer, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Carlton Parker and wife Barbara and 2 nephews, Shane Parker and Carley Parker and wife Sarah, and 2 great-nephews. Gertrude was born in Orange County on November 11, 1926. She attended Aycock High School in Cedar Grove in 1943 and then married her sweetheart, Sam. She worked for Western Electric in Burlington for one and one-half years before leaving the outside work force behind to raise her seven children. She loved her rose gardens, buttercups, lilies and gladiolas, she also enjoyed tending to the family garden, canning and freezing their vegetables. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. at Walker's Funeral Home in Hillsborough. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church, 7215 Walnut grove Church Road, Hurdle Mills, NC. Burial will follow at Eno Presbyterian Church, 5409 Efland-Cedar Grove road, Cedar Grove, NC. At other times the family will receive visitors at Sam and Gertrude's home in Cedar Grove, NC. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials or donations be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd. Burlington, NC 27215. The family wishes to extend their love and sincere appreciation for the expert care provided to "Momma" by Stephanie Frazier and Donna Farkas and the Alamance-Caswell Hospice Team, and for the many visits from the Orange County Sheriff's Department and their SALT Team. And a very special thank you to two of her great-grandchildren, Paige Borland and Payton Borland for "nursing" Grandma on Sunday afternoons.
