Gary Lee Wertman

Gary Lee Wertman, 69, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away on September 19th, 2023. He was born on September 21st, 1953, in Danville, Pennsylvania, to Betty Marr Wertman and Charles Rux Wertman, who preceded him in death.

Gary was a hardworking father and husband who was also very skilled in relaxing. He could fall asleep in seconds and snore even though he wasn't sleeping. He had several hobbies including trout fishing, ice fishing, deer & turkey hunting, mushroom harvesting, making wine, growing tomatoes, and his most favorite hobby: building and flying RC airplanes. He loved spaghetti and was famous amongst his kids for making banana snot crackers and gravy toast. He played baseball and football and loved to watch his kids play sports in high school. He was well known in his local stomping grounds of the 2nd ward in Danville, Pennsylvania.

Gary retired from Pennsylvania Power and Light after working for 40 years and was able to enjoy his retirement with his family in North Carolina. Gary is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Wertman, and their children, Rebecca Bialas, Stephanie Richardson, Jennifer Leach, Emily Shoaf, Aaron Wertman, and Matthew Wertman. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Lauren Bialas, Graham Bialas, Rosie Richardson, Benjamin Leach, Samuel Wertman, Nathan Wertman, and Ellie Wertman. Gary is also survived by his brother, Eugene Wertman, and his sister, Susan Bennett.

Gary proudly served in the military as a Navy Engine Mechanic for 6 years. His dedication and service to his country will always be remembered.

Services for Gary will be held on Monday, September 25th, at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Chapel Hill, NC with reception to follow.
