Edward Logue

Edward “Ed” William Logue, Jr., died peacefully at home, after a long illness, on September 28, 2019. He was 84 years old. Ed was born on April 12, 1935, in Pittsburgh, the only child of loving parents, Edward Sr. and Leah (Sefton) Logue. He grew up in Pittsburgh surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins. He remained an avid Steelers fan throughout his life. Ed was an accomplished musician and graduated from the Baldwin-Wallace University Conservatory of Music in Berea, Ohio, and then received a Master’s degree in Music Education from the University of Arkansas. He taught music at public schools in Ohio and Montvale, New Jersey, before settling in Metuchen, New Jersey in 1969. He was the band director from Metuchen High School for over 25 years working with thousands of students. As the director of the MHS Marching Band, he was an iconic presence at every high school football game, pep rally, high school band concert, high school musical, and appeared at every Main Street parade in all kinds of weather. His devotion to spreading music through performance and conducting continued well after his retirement from Metuchen Public Schools in 1995. He continued to perform and conduct music into his eighties. He played percussion for Plays-in-the-Park, for Easter and Christmas concerts throughout Central Jersey, and also with symphonic groups in New Jersey and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In Metuchen, he led the Brio Wind Ensemble in memorable performances of Sousa marches and other fan favorites at free concerts every Memorial Day and Fourth of July. He was a member and officer of the local musicians’ union for many years, and also served on Metuchen’s Cultural Arts Commission. He was a strong advocate of Arts Education. He was Metuchen’s own Music Man, and was proudly included in a list of Metuchen’s most prominent residents. Ed was a devoted father and family man. He had three children, Edward William, Jesse Roy, and Mary Effin with his first wife, Carol Conner Logue Marran. In 1979, Ed married June (Goldman) Stern and added step-children Rebecca and Lowell Stern to his family. Ed pursued numerous hobbies, including golf, skiing, woodworking, tinkering with his red 1951 MG-TD, and sailing with buddies at the Perth Amboy Yacht Club. He was a crew member for week-long sailboat races from Marion, Massachusetts to Bermuda. He loved working with tools and could fix almost anything around the house. He built everything from kitchen cabinets to cherished wooden toys for his many grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, June Logue of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, his children and their families: Ed Logue of New York, New York; Jesse and Ann Logue of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania; Mary Effin Logue and Mr. Terry Harris of Charlotte, North Carolina; Lowell Stern and Juleen Savarese, of Arlington, VA; Rebecca Stern and Michael McElreath of Carrboro, NC. He is also survived by grandchildren, Rachel Logue Rasmussen and her husband, Andrew Rasmussen, David Logue, and Aaron Logue and his wife, Brittany; Ben and Nicholas Stern; and Caleb and Archer McElreath. He is predeceased by beloved daughter-in-law, Ingrid Multhopp. A memorial service for close family and friends will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Walker’s Funeral Home, 120 West Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
